The upcoming weeks we will be presenting you the photographers featured in ISSUES Magazine #3. It will be released on february 28th at the Arminius church in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. We’ve asked nine local photographers to shoot a series, and the theme for this ISSUES is ‘Sin’. So, let’s ask the photographers about their sins and the work they made for ISSUES. This week it’s Zahra Reijs, who was featured in ISSUES #1 as well.
ISSUES: Tell us something about yourself. Who are you, what do you do?
I’m Zahra, 21 years old. I’m a photographer.
The theme for this edition of ISSUES Magazine is ‘Sin’. How did you implement this in your shoot?
At first i wanted to shoot in Las Vegas but I’ve learned that what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas. Then i met this woman who inspired me a lot. She used to work in nightclubs and stuff like that 40 years ago so i decided to photograph her 40 years back in time. The way i saw her in my head when she told me about that time of her life.
What can you tell us about these pictures? Did you shoot them in the USA or was it based on something you experienced while you were over there?
These photo’s i shot back home. Based on something I’ve experienced
Who’s the girl that you shot?
Awesome Priscilla from Rocket Garage
Since ‘Sin’ is this ISSUES’ theme, let’s discuss the 7 sins and see how sinful you are;
Sloth. Tell us about your laziness. What do you forget to do. Do you like to sleep? Exercise? Hate photoshopping?
I forget a lot… but i’m working on that. If you see my computer now it’s full of ‘to do’ post its. I love to sleep, but i also love to work out so i guess that’s quite a good combination.
Oh and i HATE photoshopping.
Gluttony. Tell us about your favorite food. What are you having when you really want to indulge yourself?
I’ve been dreaming about the STOUT burgers and sweet potato fries we used to get in LA a lot… unfortunately I’m not in LA.
Greed. What’s on your wish list? Even if it’s unrealistic.. And photography wise; are you a gear freak?
A greencard, a private jet which i would probably fly myself, a Vineyard in France and a mustang gt500 1967. Photographywise i’m not a gearfreak but i do have a lot of stuff i don’t really use.
Envy. What do you wish you possessed? Ever get envious looking at someone else’s work?
No, i probably get inspired but definitely not envious.
Wrath. Give us a list of things that piss you off.
Me forgetting my keys again.
Lust. Tell us a secret.
A secret is a secret.
How was it for you to work in black and white?
Horrible! I’m not much of a black and white person. I think in color and it’s so hard for me not to think in color. Even this time when I knew the photo’s had to be in color unconsciously I put this color palette in the series which I think made the series.
Where do you see yourself ten years from now?
Everywhere but in the Netherlands.
Was there a specific image that popped into your mind when you thought about sin?
Not 1 image, but the movie Leaving Las Vegas popped into my mind.
Who are your heroes? Photography, art, lifestyle, whatever.
I’m not sure who I’d call my hero. But I love Helmut Newton, Guy Bourdin, Jean Luc Godard, Harmony Korine, Rineke Dijkstra etc.
Where did you get your inspiration from?
Send us an image /photo you like that is about ‘Sin’.
How did you like the States? Would you like to move there? Any other plans for the future?
I loved it and i would love to live there. It would be totally different tho… We were living the life. Mansion in the Hollywood hills… Big ass car, fancy lunches and diners with our diamond dealing BFF every day. But I guess I wouldn’t mind living in Silver Lake either.
Next up; Moscow and New York.
